The Government is currently proposing to extend the first MoT date from three to four years with estimates it could save motorists £100m a year or £45 over a vehicle's lifetime.
The proposed change however has not been well recieved by the public, safety concerns far outweigh the proposed £45 saving, apparently at the current 3 years 17 per cent of cars taking their first MoT fail to meet minimum safety requirements. It is predicted that by postponing the MoT for 12 months, around half a million motors in an unfit state would be legally driving on UK roads.
The motor industry also opposes the Government plan, despite claims from ministers that cars are safer than ever with a host of automated systems in place nullifying the need for regular checks. Industry experts said wear and tear parts like tyres and brakes - which are two of the highest reasons for MoT failure - still need attention sooner rather than later.
