I was given the Heritage Double driving Experience (u drive cars) as a gift so took a trip upto the Bicester Heritage centre last weekend. The experience gives you the opportunity to drive two classic cars from the list below for 8 laps each.
Jaguar E-Type: 70s classic race look with a race top speed of 155 mph. The in-line 6, 4200cc and power to weight ratio of 244bhp/ton enable this beautiful car to do 0-60 mph in just 6 seconds.
Austin Healey 3000: The BJ8 was the most powerful and luxurious Austin Healey with a 150 bhp engine and servo-assisted brakes. Our Healey is an original 1964 and was fully restored by us in 2013. The engine is a in-line 6, 2912cc and the car can achieve a max speed of 121 mph with 0-60 mph in 8.2 seconds.
Ford Mustang Fastback: '67 carl, it’s V8 engine is pure muscle with 5800cc beneath the hood this American Beauty has a top speed of 125 mph and goes from 0-60 mph in 7 seconds.
Mini Cooper S: Our Mini Cooper S MK3 is an original and one of the rarest of all the Cooper S cars built with just 1,580 of these pocket rockets made. The car may only have a 1275cc engine under the bonnet but it can still reach 98mph and has fantastic road handling.
Classic Porsche 911: The classic 911 has become a very sought after car, our Porsche joined the fleet in 2016; it has the iconic Flat 6 Engine, 5-speed manual RWD. 0-60 in 5.6 seconds and has been backdated giving an authentic look and feel of the awesome 1973 RS
Aston Martin Vantage: Very much in vogue in the early seventies, the Aston Martin Vantage features a fastback style rear end and squared off front grill. With a 4200 cc in line 6 engine under the bonnet, this James Bond favourite can go from 0-60 mph in 7.9 seconds
I picked the E-type and 911 prior to arriving and was happy that it was the right choice for me. The track is relatively short but given the nature of these experiences was sufficient and had some nice corner combinations. Obviously I would always be happier with more. The instructors were keen to help you enjoy the cars and were happy to get you push a bit more etc.
I was booked into the 3pm session but on arriving early (before lunch) I was put into the next drivers briefing which covered things like what to expect, rules, safety etc. following the briefing they informed me that they would try to slot me in earlier if possible - which was the case.
The first car was the 911, only the second porsche I have ever driven - previous being the GT3 at Spa earlier in the year - the car felt good to drive, with nice handling and brakes that gave confidence. Given the size of the track and the fact that it was an "experience" it would have been difficult to get things too wrong, although later in the day another driver did manage to forget to turn for the corners! I am sure the 911 would make a very quick car, although it didn't feel brutally powerful. The instructor seemed happy enough with my driving and I really enjoyed the time in the car.
After a short break I was in the E-Type this felt a lot older than the 911 which it obviously was but seemed more powerful, the accelorator was a bit more sensitive and it felt like it would be a lot easier to over power the rear tyre in this. Once again the instructor pushed you to enjoy the car and feel how it reacted which was good.
Which would I choose if I could have taken one home?
That would be a tough choice and a lot more difficult than I would of expected, am I warming to Porsces, maybe ......
While there we took a walk around the site, which due to it being a Saturday and late in the year was quiet with very few of the businesses open, however it was still well worth taking the time to walk around what is a interesting place, I will be keen to return when the events restart next year.
