Following last year’s dress rehearsal it was hoped that the 2022 edition of Le Mans would mark the true start of the "hypercar" era, however with Peugeot still unconfirmed and looking increasingly likely to defer their entry into the World Endurance Championship until later in the season, it seems all eyes are now looking to 2023 and the arrival of factory teams from Ferrari, Porsche, Audi, Peugeot, BMW, Cadillac, Honda, Toyota, Alpine, Glickenhaus and quite possibly Aston Martin!
Following the launch of Aston Martin’s new AMR22 Formula 1 it seems that executive chairman Lawrence Stroll also has plans to take Aston Martin sports car racing, nothing has been said officially but Aston Martin is looking very seriously at a return to the place where it has enjoyed a fair bit of success, including the outright win way back in 1959. Given that Lawrence Stroll is the type of guy that wouldn't want to be late to the party, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the team joined the other factory teams on next year’s grid and given that the Valkyrie hypercar was always designed with racing at Le Mans in mind it would surely make sense?
Assuming the team is on the grid, who would the lead drivers be? Sebastian Vettel has previously expressed interest in the race and described what Hulkenberg did as ‘an incredible achievement’ presumably in part because he did it while being a full time F1 driver. In which case we should also be thinking about Nico Hülkenberg given his experience and result in the race and that he just happens to be the reserve driver for the Aston Martin F1 Team!
So it seems that what was already looking like it could possibly be the most competitive Le Mans for some time with ten factory teams fighting for outright victory, there could well be a British interest too and as we know the Brits like Le Mans like no other country, maybe even more than the host nation?
