Thoughts on the Ferrari 296?
The 296 GTB ushers in a new, turbocharged, hybrid V6 era fro Ferrari which is an addition to the range and is not supposed to be a replacement to the F8 Tributo, but intead "complements" the range, according to Ferrari. Amazingly the power output matches that of the V12 Competizione, with 819bhp (830CV) from a 2.9-litre turbocharged V6 and electric motor with both units sending all that power to the rear wheels to record a 0-62mph time of 2.9s, a 0-124mph time of 7.3s, top speed of over 205mph, and a Fiorano lap time of 1m 21s; that latter number matches up to the Ferrari F12tdf.
This is not the first Ferrari V6 of course, that honour goes to the 1957’s Dino 156, however that car and its V6 successors were all racers. The 296 is the first production road car to feature this configuration; a clean-sheet design especially for this car, producing 654bhp on its own. Ferrari claims it sets the new specific power output record for a production road car and claim it sounds special too.
Looks wise I quite like it, even if I keep seeing a GT40 / Stratos / Lotus mash-up with a Ferrari nose grafted on the front, maybe thats not totally a bad thing given how good I thought those cars looked, and its nice that Ferrari seem to have found there way back to be able to produce some good looking cars, after far too many being below what the brand deserves in the last 30 or so years.
Ferrari look to be in a good place, the management change seems to be working, finances good, new models etc. lets hope it continues and maybe they can find a bit of success on track, herritage is good but something has been missing for a long time.
I do like the fact that many of the prom shots show the car in yellow rather than the usual red. It will be good to see how this and the Maserati MC20 fare and compare.
