Not really a project and the work was not carried out by me but thought it worth a short write up.
At the start of the summer the engine in my wifes camper let go, the engine had always performed well and had not shown any problems during the time she has owned it. Despite pulling over and stopping immediately we knew something was wrong and the engine was shot. My normal point of call when I think it is something more than I can / want to deal with is Apollo Autos they confirmed what I already suspected / knew, It seems a Crankshaft/Conrod shell spun (big end bearing) and crankshaft heavily damaged. They recommended speaking to a VW / engine specialist as this would be the most cost effective route for us.
On top of this we later found that the crankcase had distorted too which meant that needed replacing too!
With no experience of VW engines we did a bit of research to find somewhere to rebuild / supple a new engine, as is often the way for every good review / recommendation there were as many bad or warnings to avoid, in the end we opted for the "The VW Engine Company" who provided a new engine quickly and efficiently. The original set-up had a full flow oil cooler which we wanted to keep although we replaced all the oil lines and remote cooler too.
As is always the case, things escalate, while the engine is out it makes sense to replace the clutch, it seems wrong to put all those old / rough bits of tin work back on, time for some powder coating, fit a new ......
The guys at Apollo Autos who refitted the new engine together with all the other new / refinished / cleaned bits did a great job as always and i'm really grateful for their help and advice.
I know it will get dirty and is for the most part unseen but the photos really dont do it justice.
With the engine in and running it is a case of taking it easy, putting some miles on it (5000, before giving it a oil and filter change together with the checks and adjustment in accordance with the engine builders requirements.
